IFMA Shanghai Chapter Brings Facility Management to the Students of Tong Ji University
Members of the Board of Directors of the IFMA Shanghai Chapter have recently met with students at top rated Tong Ji University in Shanghai to discuss the Facility Management profession and its growth in mainland China. The meeting took place between students studying Project Management and the IFMA Shanghai Chapter members, Ron Anthony, Director of Chapter operations, Joanne Cheung, CFM, Chapter Treasurer, Natina Wong, CFM, Chapter Vice President and Jason Si, Chapter member. Meeting on Tong Ji’s campus, a discussion took place that assisted the students in the basics of Facility Management. Facility Management processes, value, technical knowledge and relationships were discussed at length with Natina presenting the definition and what it means to be a FM in China, Jason presenting the technical aspects of the role and Joanne talking about the chapter as well as her personal experiences as an Facility Manager operating in China. The Toing Ji students have formed an Ad Hoc group to continue a dialog with IFMA and encourage the creation of and participation in a Facility Management curriculum. This group was formed in 2011 to investigate the potential career opportunities for Facility Management in China. The goal is to have this Ad Hoc group mature into a formal Student Chapter of IFMA Shanghai Chapter in the coming months. This is only the first step in building a strong relationship with the Universities in China, which will provide a much needed talent pool to support growing need for FM resources in China. The future of China’s real estate and facility management industries will depend on such programs developing and thriving in Shanghai and across the country in order to sustain the high level of demand in the market for a quality built environment. IFMA Shanghai Chapter looks forward to having these students contribute their fresh, new ideas and energy to the maturing Chinese Facility Management market and bring world class FM standards into actionable and measurable results.

"Sustainability 'How-To' Guide" Series
There continues to be a strong interest in facility management education as it relates to sustainability and the implementation of energy saving techniques. The IFMA Foundation, with support from IFMA’s Sustainability Committee, is producing a series of white papers to respond to this need for information.
The general objective of these guides will be to provide data and information associated with a wide range of subjects related to sustainability. Readers will view examples of successfully implemented sustainable practices and will learn to develop a business case and ROI analysis for sustainability.
Each guide will be 25-35 pages long and will contain numerous charts, tables and sidebars with quotes and links. While there is no fixed production schedule for the white papers, it is expected that there may be as many at 12 produced and posted here over the next year.
